Law Blog Pt. 4

My mom, Teri Bair, is a health law attorney. My mom graduated from South Texas College of law after getting a pharmacy degree from The University of Houston. My mom does legal work for businesses like hospitals, physicians, pharmacies, etc. When my mom was deciding what she wanted to do in college she had thought she wanted to become a doctor. She didn't think it would make sense to graduate with a biology degree because that wouldn't get her the kind of job she wanted if she didn't get into medical school so she decided to go to pharmacy school so when she graduated she would at least have a job in a field she was interested in. Once she had a pharmacy degree she went to work for a hospital and when it came time to apply for medical school she had changed her mind. While my mom was working for the hospital she lost interest in the medical field and decided to go to law school. Then once she had her law degree it made sense to use her knowledge of pharmacy and mesh that with her knowledge of law and become a health law lawyer. My mom does work with large businesses because she has never liked working with individuals which is very different from where my personal interests are. My mom also does not have to spend anytime in court. Most of my mom's previous jobs have been with big law firms because she like the excitement of big firms. She did not start working in-house or private practice until that became her only option. My mom spends a lot of her time marketing to try and bring in business but she also does a lot of contract and transactional work. The kind of law my mom practices is extremely time consuming because there is a lot of reviewing large contracts or other kinds of paperwork that take a lot of time to look over and revise. One thing my mom really enjoys about her job is getting to do things that are trend setting and changing the way other people do their contracts and legal work in the medical field. I am not very interested in this kind of law because I am not interested in helping large corporation and I don't think I would find it very rewarding. I still like the idea of helping families and children because that would be helping people more directly.

  1. Interesting blog, Izzie. I like how you are taking the time to explore the different types of law. Be open to the different opportunities that may come your way. You never know, you may change your path like Mrs. Winton!
