"Healthy" Thanksgiving
So this Thanksgiving meal was very different from one I had ever had. I have recently been way more focused on healthy and clean eating in my own life and was really nervous about how I would be able to do that on Thanksgiving. My idea was to completely take over the menu for my families meal and thankfully they let me. I wanted to try to steer clear of the green beans being completely covered in grease and the mashed potatoes that seem to be 50% butter but not loose the sense of comfort food that Thanksgiving always has. I had to get kind of creative. Instead of green bean casserole, we just boiled the green beans and left a side of bacon bits next to the plate for anyone who felt they needed something more. For mashed potatoes I thought it would be interesting to mix yams and regular potatoes to cut down on the sugar content from yams as well as not have the same necessity for crazy amounts of butter. Overall, I think the meal was amazing and it definitely addressed learning outcome 2 by allowing me to face the challenge of making Thanksgiving "healthy." I would definitely say I learned a lot about how to be creative in the kitchen and how to also convince other people in my life to eat a little healthier.
