Law Blog Pt. 3

Tom Zakes is a criminal and family lawyer located near the courthouse in Downtown Houston. He graduated from The University of Houston Law School. Since his practice is near the courthouse he gets some walk in clients as well as some clients who hear about him by word of mouth, so he doesn’t just practice criminal and family law. Tom Zakes says he does about 50-60% criminal law work, 30-40% family law work and the rest is just who ever walks in the door and needs help. When Tom Zakes got out of law school he went to clerk with a few different lawyers before taking the bar exam. One of the lawyer did criminal law and the other did family law so when he took the bar exam and became a licensed lawyer is made sense to practice those kinds of law because he already had experience. Tom Zakes favorite part about his job is being able to help people and he finds it very rewarding. Being the kind of lawyer that Tom Zakes is he spends most of his time on the phone and doing paperwork but also has to be in court almost every morning. Tom Zakes also works in a private practice all by himself because he had been applying at various firms but when nobody hired him he decided to just open up his own place.

The kind of work Tom Zakes does really interests me but since I think I am more interested in family law rather than criminal law and I don’t know how I feel about spending more time on criminal law rather than family law. I think going to intern with Vanessa is a better option for me right now based on my current interest. However, I would like to try and go to some of Tom Zakes criminal law court hearings and see some trails if he lets me. When I was younger criminal law is something that I thought I would be most interested in but as I got older and realized how much I like children and families family law I think will be the best fit for me. I am going to continue talking to a few different lawyer and find the best place for me to start an internship.
